Word Problem 2
    What is division?
  • In math, the division is the operation of finding how many times it contains another number or quantity in a number.
  • Division is the opposite of multiplying. Division can be described as repeated subtraction whereas multiplication is repeated addition.
    • 3 × 4 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12
    • 12 ÷ 3
      ⇒ 12 − 3 = 9
      ⇒ 9 − 3 = 6
      ⇒ 6 − 3 = 3
      ⇒ 3 − 3 = 0.
Counting how many times 3 been subtracted from 12, then the answer is 4.
  • In 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 12 is called dividend, 3 is divisor and 4 is called quotient.
  • Notation
    • Placing the dividend (numerator) over the divisor (denominator) with a horizontal line (fraction bar) between them.
      12
      3
        = 4
    • Writing as the dividend then a slash, then the divisor. 12 / 3 = 4.
    • Using division sign: 12 ÷ 3 = 4
    Division with remainders
  • In the case of a dividend number can not be exactly divided into parts of the divisor number, the division will have a remainder. 11 ÷ 3
    ⇒ 11 − 3 = 8
    ⇒ 8 − 3 = 5
⇒ 5 − 3 = 2, and there is not an exact 3 (divisor) left and this is the remainder
    11 ÷ 3 = 3 R2
    Division property
  • Dividing a number by 1 does NOT change the value of the number.
    3 ÷ 1 = 3
    13 ÷ 1 = 13
    123456 ÷ 1 = 123456
  • Dividing a non-zero number by itself equals 1.
    3 ÷ 3 = 1
    13 ÷ 13 = 1
    123456 ÷ 123456 = 1
  • Dividing 0 by any non-zero number equals 0.
    0 ÷ 3 = 0
    0 ÷ 13 = 0
    0 ÷ 123456 = 0
