Distance, Speed & Time (3)( Week 48 Evaluation)
1.  A ship can travel 33 km/h (kilometers per hour) with the current in a river, and 23 km/h against the current.
What is the speed of the ship in still water? km/h.
What is the speed of the current in the river? km/h.
2.  A train needs 113 seconds to cross (from entering to completely exiting the bridge) a 1725-meter long bridge. At the same speed, it needs 107 seconds to cross a 1575-meter long tunnel. What is the length of the train in meters?
3.  The distance between place A and place B is 175 yards. Mary starts out at point A, and Andy starts out at point B. If they walk towards each other, they will meet after 5 minutes. If they walk in the same direction, Andy will catch up with Mary after 35 minutes. How many yards per minute does Andy walk? yards/minute. How many yards per minute does Mary walk? yards/minute.
4.  David and his dad were riding a tandem bike in a round training trail. During the first lap, only David pedaled and the tandem bike traveled at 3 MPH. During the second lap, only his dad pedaled and the tandem bike traveled at 9 MPH. During the third lap, David and his dad both pedaled and the tandem bike traveled at 18 MPH. What was the average speed (in MPH) for the entire 3 laps?
5.  The distance between place A and place B is 3235 miles. A car drove at an average speed of 70 mph from place A to place B. During the trip, the car broke down, and it took 3 hours to fix it. In order to get to place B on time, the car has to drive at 75 mph. How many miles away from place A was the car when it broke down?
6.  Edward was running on a 2548-meter trail. He ran at 7 meters per second for the first half time and at 6 meters per second for the other half time. How many seconds did it take for him to finish the 2nd half of the distance?
7.  The ratio of Anne's walking speed to Josh's walking speed was 11:7. If they walked towards each other at the same time, they would meet each other after 4 minutes. If they started out at the same time to the same direction, and Anne was behind Josh, how long (in minutes) would it take Anne to catch up with Josh?
8.  Rene, Jay, and Michael decided to go to place B from place A. Rene and Jay started out at 8:00 am. Rene drove at 40 mph, and Jay drove at 20 mph. Michael started out at 10:00 am. Rene and Michael arrived at place B at noon together. How many minutes later did Michael catch up with Jay after Michael started out? Round up to the next whole minutes if the result is a decimal.
9.  Richard walked at 38 meters per minute, Ed walked at 44 meters per minute, and Ben walked at 49 meters per minute. Richard and Ed started out from place B together, and Ben started out from place A (behind B) at the same time in same direction as Richard and Ed. Some time later, he caught up with Richard, and then 6 more minutes later, he caught up with Ed. Find the distance (in meters) between place A and place B.
10.  A car was driven at an average speed of 45 miles per hour from place A to place B. After it got to place B, it was driven back immediately at an average speed of 55 miles per hour. The total time of the entire trip was 12 hours. How far (in miles) was the distance between place A and place B?
